How to Use Vintage Pieces With Modern Decor

You guys, I don’t think I have ever been this much excited about a blog post. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know my love for anything vintage and antique is real. So when I was asked to join in with a group of talented bloggers for a link party dedicated to decorating with mixing vintage and modern, I jumped at the chance! I know that for some, finding ways to mix in your favorite antiques with the rest of your home decor can get tricky. I totally get it, you want to add in those rustic, chippy, unique, character filled, worn pieces in a way that flows with the rest of your decor…all while steering clear of turning your house into a cluttered “thrift store”;) Well have no worries, because I am here to show you exactly how I try to achieve that “polished farmhouse” look. I’ll show you my 3 favorite antique statement pieces in my home, and how I styled them with modern “store bought” decor.

1. Antique Door with New Rope Mirror

   This antique door was a Brimfield Flea Market score for just $20! I know I’ve shown it a million times, but it will always be one of my favorite pieces. I added vintage inspired hardware from Hobby Lobby and a coastal inspired hanging mirror. I love how the black metal of the mirror ties in with the rest of the hardware we have through out the house. I love switching out the mirror with seasonal wreaths too…such a fun and easy way to switch up my decor while tying the door in with the rest of the “farmhouse chic” feel of the house.

    

2. Antique French Country Dresser With New Mirror & Lamp

   I fell in love with this set of french Country inspired dressers I found on craigslist but I knew I needed to tone down the “femininity” since it was going in our bedroom. I decided switching out the mirror that came with the dresser would help tie this piece in with the rest of the room. I chose this champagne color mirror from Homegoods because I love how it had a modern yet vintage design to the frame. I love mixing metals so I added touches of silver and brass and kept the rest of the decor neutral, minimal and classic. Lucy seems to approve too;

    

3. Antique Victorian Shutter with New Wall Mount Vases

   After holding out for a sale, I bought these two 1800’s Victorian shutters from a local Antique Co-op. I knew I wanted them for either side of the TV, but they needed something extra. I found these Artisanal Wall Mount Vases from Pottery Barn, and I love how the sleek lines of the metal and clear glass vase offset the “rusticness” of the old shutter. I love the look of a delicate pretty flower against the patina of the chippy and worn wood. Hanging something fresh and new against the character of something worn and old is my favorite way to decorate my home:)

I hope you all enjoyed this post as much as I did putting it together! I swear, trying to narrow down my 3 favorite vintage pieces is like trying to choose a favorite child….I have so much and each piece tells a different story and has so much of it’s own unique character. I guess that’s what draws me to all things vintage:) I usually try to stick with one main unique vintage piece per space, and then I tend to keep the rest of the surrounding decor simple and classic. I hope this post inspires you all to incorporate vintage pieces into your own decor…whether it be a cool trunk you found at a yard sale, or a sentimental piece handed down from  grandparent….there are so many ways to tie those special pieces in with the rest of your home.
